Imaging droplets in flight
Process development and control of non-contact printing applications is largely facilitated, if the droplets’ shape, size and velocity can be monitored. Stroboscopic techniques are cost efficient and very well suited to monitor printing processes of highly reproducible dispensing systems like TopSpot®, PipeJetTM or NanoJetTM.
The mobile stroboscopic camera developed for this purpose can be applied to any non-contact dispensing system to image the droplets in flight. After every trigger event and a constant or incremental delay a picture of the droplet is taken. Thus reproducibility of a specified setup can be examined as well as the velocity of droplet flight. Trigger in and out connections enable the synchronization with all suitable third party equipment. The mobile stroboscopic camera allows for a direct control of all BioFluidix dispensing devices via a piezo out connection.
The system consists of a high performance camera, software for data acquisition, a built-in LED light source and a solid flight case for easy transport and safe storage. Once the flight case is removed and a computer is connected, the system is ready for use. Either the dispensing device to be monitored is placed between camera and light source, or the camera and the light source are removed from the flight case and can then be placed anywhere on a machine or given setup. Various mechanical mounting and adjustment options enable the optimum positioning for nearly all purposes.
Potential applications of the stroboscopic camera system are the optimization of print parameters to generate satellite free droplets or the imaging of droplet impact on surfaces. Many practical issues with micro dispensers are greatly facilitated by this tool!
